Blogs for Slave Lake, Alberta

Our chairperson, Marilyn Cavanagh, was presented with the 2012 President's Award from the Library Association of Alberta, in April at the 2012 Alberta Library Conference in Jasper. Marilyn has worked very hard to establish a temporary library in the Lakeland Centre and to plan for a new library in the rebuilt Government Centre. This is the first time since 1993 that the President's Award has been given to a trustee. Way to go Marilyn! The library ... More...

Where would our library be without volunteers? At the Rotary Club of Slave Lake Public Library, the staff is so thankful for our many volunteers who graciously donate time, skills, and even brawn to our organization. Thank you to the volunteer who faithfully retrieves the Edmonton Journal every day (since delivery to our door is no longer available), to the many board members who make decision for the library and help out with the million and one t... Last night was a great night for Bedtime Stories. For eight pajama-clad children (and their favorite stuffed toy or doll or even action figure) stories of Spot, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Kipper and Hairy Maclary came alive. Bedtime Stories are every Thursday at 7 pm. On Wednesdays at 10:30 am, Story and Rhyme Time comes to the library, and toddlers and preschoolers can sing, listen to stories and do a craft.

I want to send out a big Thank You to everybody who has called, emailed, sent donations and just expressed their feelings and thoughts about the destruction of the library.  Support from the publishing and library community continues to pour in and I am continually amazed at the generosity of people. I love hearing from people so please feel free to call me at the number on the home page if you have any questions. "Thanks" just doesn't seem to be enough.

It is with sadness and shock that I  write this post.  As of Sunday, May 15, our beautiful new library has burned to the ground. Watching the news footage of the library in flames was one of the hardest things that I have ever had to watch.  All the hard work and effort by so many people to bring the new library to the community destroyed in minutes. All of the library staff  and board are safe and sound however, which is... More...
