Canadian Library Month - October

Posted on Friday October 12, 2007 at 10:37AM

October is Canadian Library Month. This is a time to celebrate library service and help raise public awareness of the valuable role libraries play in the lives of Canadians. The theme this year is Libraries: the World at your Fingertips.

You might be thinking that there is no time left to promote this event. Don’t be discouraged! Listed below are a few last minute quick ideas you can do to ensure your community is aware of the services you provide.

  • October 15 is Municipal Election day. Talk to the candidates about their views on libraries and post their responses in a display. After election many communities will have new/returning council members who might not know about your services. Invite them to attend some of your programs. For example, have them attend one of your story times and encourage them to read one their favorite books to the children.
  • Is your reference section collecting dust? This is your opportunity to display special materials that often get overlooked such as maps, globes, gazetteers and atlases. Incorporate the theme, “The World at your Fingertips,” into your display by including materials from around the world.
  • People love to win stuff! This month is the perfect time to hold a draw. You could draw for a free library membership, a small collection of books or your library’s book bag.
  • Display materials from both around the world and around the corner. Include material of popular travel destinations.
  • Create a sign saying “proudly serving the community of _______ since 19XX.” List your services and post the sign around your community.
  • Contact your local radio station and ask to be a guest to talk about libraries.
