A cover is just a cover

We have been asked many times about covers. The choice is numerous and people are very loyal to certain brands. I thought I would write a little about what I think makes a cover better than the next.

Breath ability: Is this really a big deal? To some it is but in reality it’s not that big of an issue. Now I know that people are going to have some big time comments about this but the truth of the matter is that if you are changing your child’s diaper on a regular interval, having a non breathable cover is not an issue. Here’s why; the moisture will be too great for any breathable cover to handle. So do you put your child in a vinyl cover? No. The breath- ability of a cover is more important when the diaper is DRY. This allows the normal heat and moisture to "breath" keeping your baby more comfortable. Once the baby voids the real purpose of a cover is to hold in the moisture to prevent leaking. So the real choice in picking a cover is how it fits.

Fit: A cover that fits usually has at least 2 of the 3 following design functions. 1) Gusseted legs. This helps form a better seal around your baby’s legs. Some are thin and some are thicker. A gusseted leg helps meet different sizes with greater ease. 2) Snaps. Velcro either will stop functioning with lint build up or scratch your baby’s soft skin. Many moms prefer snaps to Velcro because babies can pull apart the Velcro a lot easier than unsnapping the snaps. 3) Cover material. This is more of a preference for the parents than the child. Since the cover does not touch the baby how the cover feels is of no consequence. Patterns, prints etc are also for the parents. The important part of the fabric is how does it wash and wear. Is it easy to clean multiple times and still hold up and maintain its properties of breath ability? Let’s face it; having a cover that needs little thought on how to wash it is the best for moms.

Mother-Ease diaper covers saved my sanity!

When we first started using cloth diapers (right after our babe was born), I used the pull-up diaper covers that are available for rental from Happy Nappy. These worked just fine for the first few months, but once the wee one hit ~ 3months, they started leaking like mad! Practically every time she wet her diaper, I was having to change her clothes! Even though she possess a ridiculous number of clothes (thanks to a couple of very excited grandmas), it was still a bit much to be changing her outfit every 2 hours. So, we started trying various different covers to see if they were any better. Helpful hint: If you plan to do this yourself, and you are penny-pinchers like us, just borrow various brands of covers from friends, rather than buying them). Anyways.... we had no luck whatsoever. I was getting to the end of my rope and ready to call it quits and move over to the dark side (ie. disposables). Fortunately, on the advice of one more friend, we tried the Mother Ease Airflow covers, and lo and behold, the kingdom was saved! It was really quite amazing. Although we still changed the wee bottom every 2-3 hours, just to keep the babe clean and comfy, we could get away with longer if we needed to, and no more wardrobe changes every couple of hours!

So, this is a very long-winded way of saying, if you are having trouble with leaking (well, that is, if your baby is having trouble with leaking) try out the Mother Ease covers! (P.S. If YOU are having trouble with leaking, get going with those Kegel exercises...)

Mother-Ease Diaper Covers are the well you know what they are

And what they keep in! Agreed Shannon. These are indeed the best. Also when I wash them by hand between wearings (light use = light wash) they dry so super quick that I can get by with 3 cover rotations. Thanks Brent and Kate for doing the research. I too was getting a bit discouraged with the leaking and constantly running out of dry covers. :)
