Selling your Library – Signage, Part 1 (Issue 11) The signs in your library can tell a bigger story than you imagine. One misspelled word and you, as library manager, can be perceived as being illiterate. Ouch! Posted library rules that all begin with “Do not…” presents an image of a legalistic place that is not comfortable and relaxed. Selling your Library – Branding What are people saying about your library? How do they feel when they walk through the door? The sensory experience your patrons have in your library is your library’s brand. No, a brand is not just your logo, slogan, or the image that you use on your letterhead – a library’s brand is the overall feeling/reaction that the patrons have towards it. This means that you cannot control your library’s brand…but you can guide it. The first step is to understand how... More...

Theft and vandalism in the library – by librarians! You wouldn’t steal someone’s purse. You wouldn’t shoplift from a store. This week, a certain theme seemed to be developing as I went to meetings, talked to co-workers, and listened to presentations. That theme was educating the library user and how this must be an active endeavor, rather than an assumption that people will automatically know how the library catalogue works. The... More...

In December 2003, I had the pleasure of spending a weekend at your Inn along with my colleagues for our office's Christmas Party. We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend at the Inn. The rooms were lovely, very spacious and reasonably priced. The location was beautiful, quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed our long walk on the trails and looking in the shops. It was a great place for our children to have fun - and be safe. The meeting room with the fireplace was perfect for our evening together. We also... More...
