I've had a hard time getting to the computer this month as it's been a lot of hands-on programming work. We're almost half done our two fall sessions of Computers for Novices, and just finished a very successful fall session of Kids Connection (a new session has been plannned for January 13th). In between, we've had a story hour with the Day Home Providers, been to Clandonald School to promote the library, and hosted another successful book sale fundraiser for library. Hi all, I’m writing this while in Calgary for NetSpeed ’09. I’ll tell you some of the things I’m learning here next week. For now, the following is an issue that has cropped up a few times recently, so I thought I should address it. Donations Policies: A Matter of Give and Take Sometimes receiving book or materials donations from your patrons is like Christmas: you open a box and you see everything shiny and new. Oh the delight! Going into OverDrive! You’ve been hearing about OverDrive. You know it’s going live on November 2nd. Are you ready for it? Some time ago, Kelly O. sent out information on how to download the software needed. A few of you responded, and now six libraries are ready. Six. Hmmm. I’ve attached the software download information again, so if you’ve simply forgotten – here’s the reminder. When you have installed it, please let us know the name of the computer you’ve installed it on. If you’re... More...

This week, I went on van run with Joanne, so I haven’t been able to spend much time in the office. I did, however, get the chance to see most of the libraries in the Northern Lights Library System and met a lot of you briefly (very briefly!) You know how you start out with preconceived ideas of how things should be until reality taps you on the shoulder and says, “Now wait a minute…”? I’ve been experiencing that this week. Before going on vacation, Mircea asked that while on van run I keep... More...

Hello! It’s a long message this week, but one that a number of you have been asking for. Staffing & Salary Survey Report 2009 In February of 2009, the member libraries of the Northern Light s Library System were sent Staffing & Salary Surveys, and asked to return them mid-March. The survey covered: staff qualifications, staff salary ranges, library volunteers, general information and funding, benefits, continuing education for staff, and when personnel policies were put in place.... Just wanted to send a quick message expressing our thanks for a truly wonderful time at your facilities. The staff was very accommodating and friendly, your individual rooms were comfortable and clean, your meeting space suited our needs exactly and your food services were way above par. I cannot say enough about the Village Creek Country Inn, but I will say that you WILL see us again in the future. Many thanks for making our weekend retreat a huge success. Enjoy the rest of the season...... More...

Hello! As the new Public Services Consultant at Northern Lights Library Service, I’ve taken on the task of keeping up communications. Our quarterly newsletter, the Aurora, should be coming out at the end of the second week of October. I’d also like to send out a weekly blurb. This weekly communication will give you updates, provide information on services we provide, and offer tips on a variety of library topics. I will upload these to the NLLS blog as well, so they will be content... More...
