In December 2003, I had the pleasure of spending a weekend at your Inn along with my colleagues for our office's Christmas Party. We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend at the Inn. The rooms were lovely, very spacious and reasonably priced. The location was beautiful, quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed our long walk on the trails and looking in the shops. It was a great place for our children to have fun - and be safe. The meeting room with the fireplace was perfect for our evening together. We also... More...

Videoconferencing for Libraries Before coming to Alberta I had not heard anything about videoconferencing in libraries. Soon, however, I began hearing about the RISE project which attempts to “link southern Alberta communities of all sizes in a library-based videoconference network.” 1 While on van run I saw a videoconference room in a couple of our libraries, and here at headquarters videoconferencing has a room to itself (while employees are doubled up in offices!). So there must be... More...

What’s the Tweet about Twitter? A few weeks ago I promised a blurb related to my recent NetSpeed ’09 conference experience. I had hoped to get it out last week, but due to an awful cold I spent a lot of time at home, which you could have already known if you followed me on Twitter. Well, you could, if I actually kept on top of my Twitter account. This brings me to the discussion of this week’s blurb: To tweet, or not to tweet? At NetSpeed ’09 I attended “New Social Networks for Library... More...

ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation recently launched the annual Munsch at Home Contest, a fun contest where families get to write a creative story together in hopes of winning a private home visit from Robert Munsch! I've had a hard time getting to the computer this month as it's been a lot of hands-on programming work. We're almost half done our two fall sessions of Computers for Novices, and just finished a very successful fall session of Kids Connection (a new session has been plannned for January 13th). In between, we've had a story hour with the Day Home Providers, been to Clandonald School to promote the library, and hosted another successful book sale fundraiser for library. The Genealogy Interest... More...

Hi all, I’m writing this while in Calgary for NetSpeed ’09. I’ll tell you some of the things I’m learning here next week. For now, the following is an issue that has cropped up a few times recently, so I thought I should address it. Donations Policies: A Matter of Give and Take Sometimes receiving book or materials donations from your patrons is like Christmas: you open a box and you see everything shiny and new. Oh the delight! Other times, it’s like getting coal in your stockings for being... More...

Going into OverDrive! You’ve been hearing about OverDrive. You know it’s going live on November 2nd. Are you ready for it? Some time ago, Kelly O. sent out information on how to download the software needed. A few of you responded, and now six libraries are ready. Six. Hmmm. I’ve attached the software download information again, so if you’ve simply forgotten – here’s the reminder. When you have installed it, please let us know the name of the computer you’ve installed it on. If you’re... More...

This week, I went on van run with Joanne, so I haven’t been able to spend much time in the office. I did, however, get the chance to see most of the libraries in the Northern Lights Library System and met a lot of you briefly (very briefly!) You know how you start out with preconceived ideas of how things should be until reality taps you on the shoulder and says, “Now wait a minute…”? I’ve been experiencing that this week. Before going on vacation, Mircea asked that while on van run I keep... More...
