It occurred to me this morning that in order to be willing to give to your community, one first has to feel that they have something to give, and that happens when your own needs are met. I believe that we are responsible for filling our own cups, to put the things in place that make a difference to ourselves. When asked, many people claim family is important. If importance is measured by the time spent though, I think most of us would find we prioritize poorly, spending far more time doing... More...

I have had the honor of knowing some fine women during my time. It seems like today would be the best time I could think of to introduce you to them. Let's start with the most obvious, my mother, Bea Paxman. She was tough, because she had to be. She worked hard, didn't like to cook or bake, didn't like to ride on tractors, and as far as I know was not one for helping on the farm. She had a wit though, sharp and bright like those little shiny metal tacks I used to pull out of my bare feet when... More...

When you work from a home office, snow day has a different meaning than when one must commute. My morning started like most do, I get up at 5:30 a.m., do a little research, read and share the posts Ilike, stick my tongue out at the posts I think are stupid, scan the rest and drink at least two cups of coffee. This morning, it is Kick Ass...(the brand of coffee, not the motive)...and this morning most of the posts have to do with the weather. We are experiencing the worst blizzard of the... More...

It takes so long in the grocery store because that seems to be where I catch up On where the Smith's went for holidays Or how much Rebecca's grown up Where artificial rain falls on the brocolli Where the yogurt's always on sale Where people ask me about the girls Next to ice cream that comes in a pail I still feel safe in my bed here The neighbors notice when I've been gone Sometimes they wheel the bins back up the drive When I've been gone too long And when I can, I make a few calls And the... The Simon Fraser University describes a sustainable community as one that uses its resources to meet current needs while ensuring adequate resources are available for future generations. Seems like a fair enough thing to want to do. The reality is, however, that many of our small towns are teetering on the brink of sustainability because they lack the resources to meet their current needs. They do not have adequate resources for right now. That means those communities are going to have to do... More...

Step one, drive to Saskatoon, step 2 fly to Edmonton, step 3, fly to Toronto....step 4, in another couple of hours, I'm off to St. Clara, Cuba. Man, what a day that turned out to be....I'm tired...I wish I knew why it was booked that way, but I swear for the sake of a little more money...I would have taken the more expensive more direct route rather than take more than 24 hours to get anywhere. To be fair, I do get to spend the next week in Cuba. I shouldn't complain, and I know it...but my... More...
