The Riverland Recreational Trail Society (RRTS) is a nonprofit charitable organization that is in charge of the development, operation and maintenance of Albertas Iron Horse Trail. This hard working group is a collection of recreational users and groups and other community groups interested in assisting to build Albertas Iron Horse Trail for the benefit of all. The Iron Horse Trail is a highly recognized multi use recreation corridor that is 300 km long and follows the abandoned rail rightofway from Heinsburg to Smoky Lake and north at Abilene to Cold Lake. It is used by hikers, cyclists, horse back riders, wagoneers as well as traillegal ATVs and snowmobile enthusiasts. RRTS volunteers maintain a Trail Steward Program where they monitor the trail for standards of safety and user enjoyment. The organization meets quarterly and the executive meets monthly. New members are always welcome and anyone with an interest in trail maintenance, development, staging areas, provincial policy and framework, environmental stewardship, educational programs promoting safe trail use or connecting trails is invited to contact us for more information.
